Each spring, Hay-on-Wye throws its arms open to the world as thousands of book lovers collect for Hay Festival, an annual, 11-day showcase of the latest ideas in the arts and sciences. But beyond the tented festival site there is much to explore in and around the charmingly historic town itself. Nestled on the banks of the River Wye in the Brecon Beacons National Park, overlooked by a ruined castle and awash with independent bookshops, cafés and unique shops, Hay-on-Wye is a place straight out of a fairy tale. Literary bliss.
